We were curious to try the Bosch AdvancedGrassCut 36. Bosch is one of the most trusted names in garden tools, and the 36V system sounded promising.
The tool does feel well-built in the hand. The dual-line cutting system provides a neat finish on standard grass, and the semi-automatic line feed means you do not have to bump the head on the ground to release more line. That is a genuine convenience.
The adjustable auxiliary handle is comfortable, and the plant protector bracket is a thoughtful addition for trimming around flower beds without accidental damage.
However, we found some significant limitations. With only a standard brushed motor, it does not match the efficiency of brushless alternatives. We noticed the battery draining faster than expected during our tests, and the 2.0Ah battery gave us only about 30 minutes of actual cutting time.
We tested it along a fence line with mixed grass and light weeds. It handled the grass well enough, but struggled with anything thicker than standard lawn growth. The 1.6mm dual-line simply does not have the cutting power of metal blades.
For another test, we tried to edge a long gravel path border. Without dedicated wheels or a proper edging mode, achieving a consistent straight edge was difficult. We had to rely entirely on a steady hand, and the results were uneven compared to what we achieved with the Lawnora edger wheels.
The biggest drawback is the lack of versatility. This is a line trimmer only. There is no brush cutter function, no metal blade option, and no way to tackle heavy overgrowth. At nearly £200, you are paying a premium for the Bosch name but getting a tool that can only handle one type of job.

The build quality is excellent, as you would expect from Makita. The brushless motor runs quietly and smoothly, and the speed indicator panel is a useful feature that shows real-time performance data including overload and overheat status.
The telescopic shaft is a welcome addition, and the reverse rotation function for clearing tangled grass is something we genuinely appreciate.
However, at this price, we expected more versatility. This is still a single-purpose line trimmer. There is no brush cutter mode, no metal blades, and no dedicated edging system with wheels. You are paying a significant premium for a tool that fundamentally does only one job.
We tested it on a section of overgrown allotment border with thick grass and nettles. While it cut through standard grass with ease, the nylon line struggled with the thicker nettles and we had to make several passes. The maximum speed of 6,000 RPM is considerably lower than what we have seen from other tools in this price range.
For a second test, we attempted to use it as a makeshift edger along a patio border. Without any guided wheels or a proper 90-degree head rotation, getting a clean edge required real skill and patience. The wire guard helped prevent damage to the patio, but the results were nowhere near as precise as a tool designed with edging in mind.
The 5.0Ah battery does last well, giving us around 35-40 minutes of work time. But at this price point, we feel the tool should offer more than just line trimming. For a fraction of the cost, you can find 3-in-1 tools that do everything this does and more.
